One of the most effective methods of teaching kids about inclusivity and diversity is by highlighting the myriad of worldwide celebrations. By taking the time to learn about cultures through their festivities and holidays, children are given the opportunity to appreciate the wonderful differences in our identities. That’s why this week’s booklist is dedicated to celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month! Follow along for a debrief on why we honor this month and how we can enhance kids’ knowledge through exceptional picture books.
Established in 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Month is held from September 15th to October 15th. The event commemorates the incredible cultural, social, and artistic contributions Hispanic Americans have made to shape history impermeably and forever. For people both inside and outside the community, it’s a chance to honor the victories gained by Hispanic Americans, while also reserving space to honor the lives lost to effectively establish independence. What initially started as a one-week celebration in 1968 eventually expanded to a month-long commemorative in 1988, after President Ronald Regan signed the event into law. September 15th was chosen as the beginning date to reflect the anniversary of the Cry of Dolores, the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which later resulted in the formation of a free Federal Republic of Central America. Since its official declaration in 1988, the revered month has received an official Presidential proclamation ever since. National Hispanic Heritage Month’s history is as rich in complexity and victory as the community it celebrates.
